Fano resonance in the nonadiabatic pumped shot noise of a time-dependent potential well

We use the Floquet scattering theory to study the correlation properties of the nonadiabatic pumped dc current and heat flow through a time-dependent potential well. Oscillator induced quasibound states of electrons can transit to the Floquet states leading to resonant tunneling effect. Virtual electron scattering processes can produce pumped heat flow, pumped shot noise and pumped heat flow noise, with presence of time and spatial reversal symmetry. When one of the Floquet levels matches the quasibound level there strikes a "Fano" resonance

An Empirical Study on Web Usability

This project aims to better utilize the World Wide Web as a sociotechnical capital by improving web usability and user experience. Grounded in human-computer interaction literature, four hypotheses were formed and tested via two task-oriented studies: an online survey and an eye tracking study. Subjective assessments and objective measurements were taken. The results provided insight on designing websites that facilitate a more effective and pleasant user experience. Implications for improving the World Wide Web as social capital are discussed

Correlation-based communication in wireless multimedia sensor networks

Wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs) are networks of interconnected devices that allow retrieving video and audio streams, still images, and scalar data from the environment. In a densely deployed WMSN, there exists correlation among the observations of camera sensors with overlapped coverage areas, which introduces substantial data redundancy in the network. In this dissertation, efficient communication schemes are designed for WMSNs by leveraging the correlation of visual information observed by camera sensors. First, a spatial correlation model is developed to estimate the correlation of visual information and the joint entropy of multiple correlated camera sensors. The compression performance of correlated visual information is then studied. An entropy-based divergence measure is proposed to predict the compression efficiency of performing joint coding on the images from correlated cameras. Based on the predicted compression efficiency, a clustered coding technique is proposed that maximizes the overall compression gain of the visual information gathered in WMSNs. The correlation of visual information is then utilized to design a network scheduling scheme to maximize the lifetime of WMSNs. Furthermore, as many WMSN applications require QoS support, a correlation-aware QoS routing algorithm is introduced that can efficiently deliver visual information under QoS constraints. Evaluation results show that, by utilizing the correlation of visual information in the communication process, the energy efficiency and networking performance of WMSNs could be improved significantly.PhDCommittee Chair: Akyildiz, Ian; Committee Member: Ammar, Mostafa; Committee Member: Ji, Chuanyi; Committee Member: Li, Ye; Committee Member: Romberg, Justi

Mining Dynamic Document Spaces with Massively Parallel Embedded Processors

    Get PDF
Currently Océ investigates future document management services. One of these services is accessing dynamic document spaces, i.e. improving the access to document spaces which are frequently updated (like newsgroups). This process is rather computational intensive. This paper describes the research conducted on software development for massively parallel processors. A prototype has been built which processes streams of information from specified newsgroups and transforms them into personal information maps. Although this technology does speed up the training part compared to a general purpose processor implementation, however, its real benefits emerges with larger problem dimensions because of the scalable approach. It is recommended to improve on quality of the map as well as on visualisation and to better profile the performance of the other parts of the pipeline, i.e. feature extraction and visualisation
